The genitive case

Wessen?

Whose?

The Genitiv (genitive case) answers the question Wessen? — Whose? It shows possession: what belongs to someone or something — an object, a person, an idea.

  • Der Kaffee der Studentin. — The student's coffee.
  • Das Eis des Kindes. — The child's ice cream.
  • Die Makrone des Mädchens. — The girl's macaron.
  • Die Bäckerei der Tante. — The aunt's bakery.

Artikel im Genitiv

Articles in the Genitiv

The article changes: der → des, das → des, die → der, die (plural) → der. Masculine and neuter nouns also take the ending -(e)s.

  • Die Tasse des Mädchens. — The girl's cup.

Endung: -s oder -es

Ending: -s or -es

-s — if the word has 2 or more syllables or ends in -er, -en, -el

  • des Lehrers — of the teacher
  • des Fensters — of the window

-es — if the word is short, with one syllable

  • des Mannes — of the man
  • des Kindes — of the child
  • Das Croissant des Lehrers. — The teacher's croissant.
  • Der Kakao des Schülers. — The pupil's cocoa.
  • Das Poloshirt des Mannes. — The man's polo shirt.
  • Die Luftmatratze des Kindes. — The child's air mattress.

Tip: This rule is only for masculine and neuter nouns. Feminine nouns take no ending: der Studentin, der Tante.
