Use it when you mention a noun for the first time.
ein — for masculine and neuter nouns
Das ist ein Papagei. — This is a parrot.
Das ist ein Haus. — This is a house.
eine — for feminine nouns
Das ist eine Tomate. — This is a tomato.
Das ist eine Melone. — This is a melon.
Tip: There is no indefinite article in the plural: Das sind Äpfel.

Definite article
Use it when you mention the noun again — we already know which one.
der — for masculine nouns
Der Apfel ist groß. — The apple is big.
Der Fisch ist klein. — The fish is small.
das — for neuter nouns
Das Wasser ist kalt. — The water is cold.
Das Schaf ist klug. — The sheep is clever.
die — for feminine nouns and the plural
Die Banane ist gelb. — The banana is yellow.
Die Milch ist warm. — The milk is warm.
Zuerst ein, dann der
First ein, then der
- Das ist ein Buch. Das Buch ist interessant. — This is a book. The book is interesting.
- Das ist eine Katze. Die Katze ist klug. — This is a cat. The cat is clever.
- Das ist ein Hund. Der Hund ist weiß. — This is a dog. The dog is white.
- Das sind Äpfel. Die Äpfel sind süß. — These are apples. The apples are sweet.
- Das ist ein Frosch. Der Frosch ist grün. — This is a frog. The frog is green.
